The day to day administration of Charitable Company Limited is carried out by the Trust Office in Taupō.
BACKGROUND OF GRANTS DISTRIBUTION
Providing support to Owners and their descendants had been a long term goal of Trustees right from when TN2T was established in the 1990s. Initially grants were offered for Tertiary education but were extended in 2006. There was a view to provide some of the initiatives to Ngāti Tahu in the future once the Trust’s affairs were on track and growth was on a steady increase. An action plan was established to coincide with the commissioning of Nga Awa Purua power station in 2010.
Since then, the Trust office has promoted the role of Charitable Company (CCL) to Owners and their descendants through various channels. The result has been a consistent annual increase in the total value and number of grants distributed to Owners and their descendants.
CHARITABLE STATUS
CCL has been appointed charitable status by the Charities Commission due to the initiatives delivered by CCL falling within the charities category. There are many benefits to being a Charitable Trust. For example, holding charitable status allows CCL to apply for funds made available to those organisations with charitable status, in order to deliver initiatives to individuals of the Trust. Another benefit is that all income received by CCL is eligible for a zero tax rate, meaning that no income tax is paid. This, therefore, frees up further funds for distribution to Owners and their descendants in the form of grants and scholarships.
BENEFICIARIES OF CHARITABLE COMPANY
As stated in the constitution of Charitable Company Limited and under the Charities Act 2005, the Directors of Charitable Company Limited must give preference firstly to the Owners and descendants of the Trust, then persons belonging to the iwi Ngāti Tahu, and finally to the public of New Zealand.
Tauhara North No.2 Trust was formed to own and manage three blocks of land, known as Tauhara North 2A, Tauhara North 2B and Tauhara North 2C. These blocks of land (which were originally a single parcel of land), were granted to the ancestors of the Owners by a Native Land Court ruling in the 1800s. The current Owners are the descendants of those original persons to whom the land was granted. There are currently 792 registered Owners comprising of individual and Whanau Trusts, who together, by way of their beneficial interest in the Trust, own the land. The blocks of land are within the area occupied by Ngāti Tahu, and most of the Owners are members of Ngāti Tahu. It is for this reason that the Ngāti Tahu iwi is the second group of beneficiaries of the charitable activities of Charitable Company Limited.
